About the Author: Thomas E. Skidmore is Professor of Latin American History and former Director of Ibero-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of Politics in Brazil, 1930-1964: An Experiment in Democracy and Black into White: Race and Nationality in Brazilian Thought.
