Stomatherapy is a nursing speciality that promotes preventive and rehabilitative care for people with stomata, acute and chronic wounds, anal and urinary incontinence and fistulae. With this in mind, the question was asked as to what the care practices in enterostomal therapy would be for the nursing professional, and the technical skills of the enterostomal therapist (ET) nurse, their main functions and their autonomy in the position were addressed. The study found that nurses are professionals in the healthcare team who are technically competent and have the specific skills to perform their duties as enterostomal therapists. In this way, this study aims to provide health professionals with reflections on the field of action, the origin and evolution, as well as the main care of the ET nurse, demonstrating its importance in the process of preventing the loss of skin integrity as well as contemplating holistic care for the human being in its fullness.
