Comtesse Marie-Madeleine de La Fayette (1634 -1693) lebte nach der Geburt zweier Söhne getrennt von ihrem Ehemann in Paris. Hier verkehrte sie am königlichen Hof und gründete einen literarischen Salon. 1662 begann sie selbst zu veröffentlichen. Nach einem intellektuell und gesellschaftlich ausgefüllten Dasein zog sie sich gegen Ende ihres Lebens ähnlich ihrer Heldin vom Hof zurück.
