The role of the pharmacist has undergone profound changes in recent years. The European trend seems to be that pharmacists are moving from being product-oriented to service-oriented. This focuses the importance of developing studies such as this one to analyze not only the professional pharmacy service in Europe and Spain, but the role of the community pharmacist in these services and the importance of continuing to invest in research and education in the discipline of Pharmacy. The rationale of this paper is to present a descriptive study based on academic and official evidence about the deficiencies or shortcomings of the professional pharmacy service in Spain, in comparison to the professional pharmacy services provided in other European countries, and to establish recommendations at national level for the incorporation of professional pharmacy services.
