Steven "Steve" Horne, a veteran and Family Practice Physician Assistant, now enjoys his retirement in the serene environs of Rapid City, South Dakota. Steve's journey began when he graduated from Cassopolis High School in June 1970 and soon after, he responded to the call of duty by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in July 1970.Steve's military service was highlighted by his tenure on the USS Newport News (CA148) from 1971 to 1972, a pivotal period during which he participated in the Battle of Haiphong Harbor. This fierce encounter is remembered as the most substantial naval battle of the Vietnam War, cementing Steve's courageous spirit. Following his tour of duty in Vietnam, Steve served at the Naval Hospital Orlando before undertaking a two-year tour at the esteemed Great Lakes Naval Station. His time in the Navy culminated with independent duty at Beachmaster Unit 1, situated in the iconic NAB Coronado Island.On leaving the military, Steve transitioned into the medical sector, securing a coveted spot in the Physician Assistant Training program for the Federal Prison System, based at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. However, life took an unexpected turn with the untimely death of his first wife, leading him to resign and relocate back to Orlando. In search of a fresh start, Steve pursued a new path in the culinary arts, enrolling in the respected Chef's program at Mid-Florida Tech.A fateful incident at The Marriot Hotel, where Steve was honing his cooking skills, thrust him back into the medical world. Called upon to assist in a medical emergency, Steve successfully resuscitated a fellow employee who had fallen into a seizure and stopped breathing. This life-altering moment sparked his realization that his true calling was in medicine, with his cooking talent reserved for intimate circles. Reinvigorated, Steve applied to the University of Central Florida (UCF) and secured his Associate's degree. With renewed determination, he progressed to the University of Florida's Physician Assistant (PA) Program, not only graduating in 1986 but also earning the distinct honor of being elected class president.Upon graduation, Steve devoted himself to family practice, gaining extensive experience in several practices throughout Orlando. The year 2000 marked a new chapter as he relocated to Atlanta and joined the team at North Atlanta Primary Care.Steve served the Cumming, Georgia community with unwavering commitment until his well-earned retirement in 2019. Today, he looks back on a rich, multifaceted career that blended service to his country, commitment to the medical profession, and a passion for culinary arts.
