Joe Cohen was born in San Francisco in 1934, the son of Sam, a policeman, andLillian, a housewife. When he was ten, the family moved to Redwood City, where hegraduated from Sequoia High School. During the Korean War he underwent intelligence and reconnaissance training and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, though he saw no combat. After discharge, he worked a series of jobs, traveled, and eventually graduated from San Francisco State with a degree in Journalism. He married Joyce Sandell in1961 and worked for a year as a newspaper reporter in Las Vegas, After that he returned permanently to the Bay Area, where his daughter Rachel was born in 1965. He worked various jobs in the Teamsters Union for 25 years and was a substitute teacher in the Oakland School District for 22 years. During those years his marriage broke up. He has written eight books, seven of which have been published with Regent Press in Berkeley.
