Der dunkelhäutige Anwalt Bannister sitzt zu Unrecht im Gefängnis. Als ein Bundesrichter und seine Geliebte ermordet aufgefunden werden, kann er seine Zeit im Knast verkürzen. Der Thriller führt zwar nicht zum Nägelbeißen oder zu beanspruchten Gehirnzellen, ist aber clever konstruiert und so unterhaltsam, dass man ihn gut in einem Rutsch durchhören könnte.
Jackson liest angenehm literarisch, mit dem für dunkelhäutige Amerikaner typischen Tonfall und klingt dabei teilweise wie Denzel Washington. Am 22. Oktober erscheint in den USA übrigens die Fortsetzung von "Die Jury" ("Sycamore Row"). Oder: "Pageturner 22".
