Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dakota McElhinny also spent time growing up in the small town of Morganton, North Carolina. There, he gained his associate of arts degree from Western Piedmont Community College, and later, he received a bachelor's degree in sport management from North Greenville University. Currently, McElhinny lives in South Carolina and works as an author, freelance writer, and consultant. In the summer of 2006, McElhinny wanted to better his cursive handwriting, so he began writing short stories for fun, which led to him falling in love with writing. In the summer of 2010, he began laying down the foundation for The Realm, his first novel and the first book of The Realm trilogy.
