Elinor Glyn was a British novelist and scriptwriter. She was a pioneer in erotic fiction for women and coined the word "It" as a euphemism for sex. She moved to Hollywood where she worked with Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino. Glyn uses the premise that a woman does one of three things to a man. She elevates him, degrades him, or bores him. The Reason Why was written in 1912. It is the story of a Russian peasant whose husband is killed in a fight. She travels to England to live with a rich uncle. The uncle does not know about her son or her past.
