The book opens with the assassination attempt of Steve Alden, a smart, successful and driven man. Haunted by the memories of a bleak childhood, Steve transforms his fear of never having enough into always getting what he wants: the beautiful wife, the big estate, the cutting-edge business. The last thing to cross off his list is entrance into the most exclusive club in town, the kind he saw pictures of in magazines at the doctors office when he was young. As Steve finally hobnobs with the best of societies best, he feels like it's still not enough and what starts as the need to sit at the best table in the house ends in depravity, jealousy and rage. But who felt enough rage to actually want to kill him? Through the eyes of Steve's wife, Barbara, we learn about the ladies at the ultra posh Upper Brookville Country Club; where they shopped, what they wore, their secrets, and where they sat at the clubs formal dinner dances was very important. We also learn about the journey that it takes to become a part of this Club.
