The Rise of Riverhorse covers the life of Jesse Rivers from age eight to seventeen. Eight-year-old Jesse is already a horse thief. Before they reach their destination, Jesse is captured by the Comanche. The rest of the book follows his assimilation into the Comanche horse and warrior culture. Jesse is adopted by a renowned Comanche horseman and trader with two wives, one Comanche and one a captured white woman. The white woman teaches Jesse to read and write. As Jesse grows older, he kills his first Buffalo, goes on his first raiding party, steals his first horse, and makes his first kill in battle. Between horse racing and raiding he becomes a respected warrior at a very young age bringing fame to his village. Be at Jesse's side as he slips through a Pawnee village to steal a horse.
