This work examines the roles and statuses of the English language in Nigeria before and after her independence in 1960. It traces the historical as well as sociolinguistic development of English in Nigeria from the pre-independence to the post-independence period. Three approaches to the notion of Nigerian English are explicated. The conclusion is that Nigerian English is in existence and may, one day, become Nigeria`s national language.
