Spoiler!
Evelyn is not portrayed as a heroine in the book. Because of her past, that's a good thing, because she's willing to do anything to protect her career, but also her family. However, the flow of the book is quickly clear. Of course, we know that Evelyn's marriages were not based on love (at least not all of them). I found the section with Evelyn's daughter very strange, as she has a real breakdown at 14 and makes some serious decisions (three of them in one bed - at 14 ...mind you).... The mother's reaction seems quite mild to me.
In general, Evelyn seems rather indifferent and self-centered, even though she emphasizes that her family means everything to her. The eternal back-and-forth with her affair Celia is exhausting to read. At some point, you can't listen to it anymore. Of course, Evelyn has to make the final decision when it comes to the two of them staying together, but Celia is terminally ill. Many predictable developments run through the story, making it boring to read.
The ending is rather quick and emotionless. Also, the resolution of why Evelyn wanted Monique of all people to write is quite predictable. Monique's reaction and decision not to tell her mother is incomprehensible for the reader.. All in all, this is a book about a woman who is very focused on her career and has made many serious decisions in her life.
