This book explores the intertextual relationships and influences detectable in and between the works of the Shelleys and the Brownings. It addresses a previously neglected area of research by focusing on Browning's later poems in relation to Shelley's works, Mary Shelley's influence on Browning's early poems and Shelley's presence within Elizabeth Barrett Browning's writings. It also engages with the four writers' shared thematic preoccupations, including historical consciousness, exile, gender and liberal politics.
