When Professor Allen, sceptic and atheist, is fired from Ivy League academia on charges of gross moral turpitude, he assumes things can't get any worse. But it's just the beginning of a seemingly never-ending freefall from grace. His illusions of bland, middle-class respectability are finally shattered when he learns that the recently deceased uncle he took for a diligent functionary of the railways was in fact the mastermind of an infamous heist. Forced to travel to Buenos Aires as executor of the will, Allen finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue surrounding a part of the legacy: a mysterious statue of the Magdalene acquired from Nazi sympathizers. But the statue possesses much more than the power to move the Professor to faith. It contains a secret striking at the heart of historical Christianity ¬- one that certain authorities will kill to suppress.
