Smear layer is a hot topic of discussion in the field of Endodontics and Pediatric Endodontics. This difference of opinion among researchers is never ending. Those who support its retention advocate its modification to a more stable and stronger structure by the use of certain chemicals which can chemically react with the smear layer to alter its structure and they claim it to have a stronger mechanical and chemical union with the root canal sealer that proves favourable in the long run. Research in this area is still on, to further discover its effects in clinical practice but till date whatever has been done to analyze the status of this tenacious, extremely adherent modified smear layer has shown promising results, both in conservative dentistry and endododontics.
