In this book, the bravery of a very frightened Ukrainian refugee in an English seaside town could lead to the capture and imprisonment of a killer. If she dares to speak up. When the brewery threatens to close down the only pub left in the town, a retired Major leads a call to arms in an attempt to stop it. Central to the action is the efforts of a group of locals trying to cope with the Government's 'Localism Act' and the ins and outs of creating an 'Asset of Community Value' against the clock. Will they make it in time? Someone is pushing to bring the tenancy of the pub to an end and close it down, so that it can be sold, and that results in a campaign of the worst sort of mental harassment, as the deadline to achieve a sale approaches. It is down to Clarice, a carer at the facility where the pub's tenant was hospitalised before she died, to prove that someone had a hand in her death, and nobody is taking her seriously. Kalyna is traumatised by the escape her family had to make from Ukraine when Russia invaded, and is petrified that she will be sent back, but she holds the key to catching a killer, here in this sleepy seaside town, as she tries to make a new life for herself and her family. This story has several themes working in parallel, including the actions of an unscrupulous accountant, and the plight of a family of refugees from Ukraine. There is harassment, Covid 19, business skulduggery and fraud. And through it all, the attempts of a group of local retired people trying to rescue their pub for the community ties the strings together. This fast-moving story is designed to intrigue, captivate and delight the reader, with Bob Able's signature gentle humour never far from the action.
