This book is an analysis of education systems in West Africa and explains how education in most countries in West Africa have undergone several evolutions and modifications towards Peace Education. The idea that education should conform to the needs of the society is already in people¿s consciousness and therefore presents itself as an opportunity that can be exploited. The few formal Peace Education initiatives undertaken at the central level in West African countries are conducted by countries in post-conflict reconstruction phases that intend to re-build social cohesion and set foundations for lasting peace. Many initiatives are also taken at the level of higher education, by universities and colleges. Finally, a good number of initiatives taken by NGOs across the region can be exploited. The book concludes with an outline of the challenges encountered in the field by Peace Education initiatives, and underlines the need for capacity building in the region.
