Autorenporträt
Ethel Turner was an English-born Australian playwright and children's book author who lived from January 24, 1870, to April 8, 1958. Ethel Mary Burwell was her birth name. She was born in Doncaster, England. When she was two years old, her father died, leaving her mother Sarah Jane Burwell with two girls, Ethel and Lillian. The next year, Sarah Jane married Henry Turner. He was twenty years older than her and already had six kids of his own. He and Sarah Jane had a daughter named Rose. Henry Turner died quickly, leaving Sarah Jane with nine kids and not much money. Sarah Jane moved to Australia with Ethel, Lillian, and Rose in 1879. She married Charles Cope and had his son Rex in the next two years. Ethel Turner went to New South Wales Public School in Paddington and Sydney Girls High School. She was one of the first 37 students to attend Sydney Girls High School. At age 18, she started writing professionally when she and her sister Lillian started the Parthenon, a magazine for kids. She wrote pieces for kids in the Illustrated Sydney News and then the Australian Town and Country Journal as "Dame Durden."
