By the time of Queen Victoriaâ s accession Hull was six times as large as it had been in 1700, but after the First World War Hull lost its place as the third largest port in the country, and since the Second World War, in which more than 90 per cent of all Hullâ s houses were either damaged or destroyed, Hull could recover only slowly.

Autor

Richard Gurnham gained his PhD in 1976. He teaches history and politics at Kind Edward VI Grammar School. He has also worked for many years as an adult education lecturer in the county, taking local history courses in many different towns and publishing numerous local history studies.
