""The Story of Kennett"" by Bayard Taylor is a novel set in the small town of Kennett, Pennsylvania during the mid-19th century. The story follows the lives of several characters, including Hugh Brinkley, a young man who dreams of escaping the monotony of small-town life and making a name for himself in the world. He becomes involved with Deborah, a young Quaker woman who is torn between her religious beliefs and her love for Hugh. Meanwhile, Kennett is undergoing significant changes as the railroad arrives, bringing new opportunities and challenges to the town. The novel explores themes of love, ambition, and the tension between tradition and progress. Through vivid descriptions of the town and its inhabitants, Taylor creates a rich and authentic portrait of life in rural America during this period. ""The Story of Kennett"" is a timeless tale of human aspiration and the struggle to find one's place in the world.Meanwhile, the wonderful glamour of her presence--that irresistible influence which at once takes hold of body and spirit--had entered into every cell of his blood. Thought and memory were blurred into nothingness by this one overmastering sensation. Riding through the lonely woods, out of shade into yellow, level sunshine, in the odors of minty meadows and moist spices of the creekside, they twain seemed to him to be alone in the world. If they loved not each other, why should not the leaves shrivel and fall, the hills split asunder, and the sky rain death upon them? Here she moved at his side--he could stretch out his hand and touch her; his heart sprang towards her, his arms ached for very yearning to clasp her,--his double nature demanded her with the will and entreated for her with the affection! This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Autorenporträt
Bayard Taylor was an American poet, literary critic, translator, travel author, and diplomat. As a poet, he was extremely popular, with an audience of almost 4,000 attending a poetry reading once, setting a record that remained for 85 years. His travelogues were well-received in both the United States and Britain. He held diplomatic appointments in both Russia and Prussia. Taylor was born January 11, 1825, in Kennett Square, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth son of Quaker couple Joseph and Rebecca Taylor, and the first to reach maturity. His mother was of half Swiss descent. His father was an affluent farmer. Charles Frederick Taylor, Bayard's younger brother, was a Union Army colonel killed in action during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Bayard obtained his early education at an academy in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and later in nearby Unionville. At seventeen, he was apprenticed to a printer in West Chester. Rufus Wilmot Griswold, a renowned critic and editor, pushed him to produce poems. The resulting anthology, Ximena, or the Battle of the Sierra Morena and Other Poems, was published in 1844 and dedicated to Griswold.
