The main character in this story is an architect and artist. Several visits to local carnivals, beginning when he was ten, lead him to a gypsy fortune teller, telling him about his future and his Destiny with the sea. While in college, he becomes best friends with his roommate, Nick, who remains a best friend into the future. They both end up getting property by the ocean on the SW coast of Mexico where they build their vacation houses.
