Sustainable tourism calls for alternative forms of tourism as well as greening the existing tourism facilities, notably improving the environmental management of existing accommodations. This monograph examines the environmental practises of tourist hotels and apartments on the Kenya Coast Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu areas. More than half of the accommodations have implemented measures to improve waste management, wastewater management and local community support. Measures to reduce energy and water consumption are still in their infancy. Indirect measures in respect of environmental organisation, guest environmental instructions and nature conservation are largely absent. Even though the environmental measures that were introduced can be regarded as steps towards sustainable tourism, they mostly do not ask for great efforts or large investments. This monograph gives recommendations for tour operators, hotels and government agencies and will also be of interest to students of tourism in general; it offers a foundation for studies of sustainable tourism.
