A meeting with a man named Simon during a routine jog near his home in Canberra catapults Professor Nathaniel Jones into a world of deceit, lies, love, lust and murder. Simon belongs to a shadowy group which enlists Professor Jones, a history lecturer at the Australian National University, to find out what happened to the stone tablets bearing the Ten Commandments. From the beginning, Nathaniel is lied to and placed in a position where his survival is on a knife's edge. Enticed by a sect calling themselves the Elegidos, Nathaniel is hounded by the Cenobites, the organization that first recruited him. Both parties have secretly been at war with each other for many years. The Cenobites are aware that the Elegidos have possession of the tablets but could never find out where they were hidden. The Elegidos on the other hand have gone to great lengths to retain possession of what they believe is their ancestral heritage. An open war begins between the two factions with Nathaniel at the centre of the conflict.
