THE TALE OF THE CAT AND THE WHALE tells the story of two animal characters who wanted to be something other than what they were. The whale wished to be able to fly in the sky like a butterfly or to walk on land like a cat. The cat wanted to be a whale and just open his mouth and fill his belly with tons of fish and delicious seafood. When a little fairy makes their wishes come true, our animal friends find themselves in all sorts of misadventures in two different, unfamiliar ecosystems. In the end, everything goes back to the way it was. And the cat and the whale return to their simple, normal lives, happy and content. FABLE OR FAIRY TALE ? In the oral tradition of every country and civilization in the world, we find myths, legends, fables, folk tales, and fairy tales - all fantasy stories that have become world-famous for their universal teachings. The terms fable and fairy tale are often used as synonyms today, although some differences distinguish them. Fables are short stories written to teach an ethical or practical lesson through practical examples and usually deal with common human traits or qualities - vices and virtues such as patience, bravery or cowardice, laziness, cunning, or malice. The lesson - i.e. how different situations develop depending on the behavior of the characters, with advice on the right way to behave - is made easily understandable by the artificial device of talking animals, depicted with strongly stereotyped traits (e.g. the fox is cunning, the lion is brave, etc.), and is usually summed up in a moral. The most famous classic fables of all time are, The Fox and the Sour Grapes, The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Cicada and the Ant, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, and so on. Fairy tales are mostly fantasy stories of Northern European origin, involving magical elements and fantastic characters (such as elves, fairies, witches, wizards, ogres, giants, dragons, mermaids, etc.) Unlike a fable, a fairy tale usually has a longer and more complex plot, the lesson conveyed is more implicit, left to to the young reader to understand, and usually relates to the genius or courage of the main characters - heroes, kings, princesses - who have to overcome trials and dangers. All classic fairy tales begin with the famous words "Once upon a time" and end with a happy ending, often emphasized by the phrase "They all lived happily ever after." Some of the classic fairy tales that have become world-famous are Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Pinocchio, The Pied Piper, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, The Sword in the Stone, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and many more. So, is our Tale of the Cat and the Whale a fable or a fairy tale? Well, our tale has some of the characteristics of a fable (a short story, with talking animals and it ends with a moral -which in our case is: "Although the grass may look greener on the other side, it often isn't"). But it also has some of the magical elements you would expect from a fairy tale (a little fairy, a magic spell), and, like all good fairy tales, it has a happy ending. It can rightly be described as a "hybrid", a combination of both fable and fairy tale.
