The third and fourth books of Kings is an essay of the history of Israel, from the death of King David to the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple of Solomon by the Babylonians. The time of narration covers about 400 years, approximately from 975 to 586 B.C. Samaria, capital of the Kingdom of Israel, fell in 722, Jerusalem, capital of the Kingdom of Judea, - in 586 B.C. About the same historical period is mentioned in the books of Paralypomenon. The text was processed by priests in the 6th century B.C. on the basis of royal annals and prophetic traditions. In the Hebrew assemblies Samuel's books formed a single whole. In the Septuagint they were divided into four books and were called the Book of Kings. In the Vulgate, 2 of them bear the name of Samuel, the hero-judge, and the other 2 are the books of Kings. In the XVI century this division was also borrowed from the Hebrew Bible. The books were created on the basis of various sources, their modern form was formed before the Babylonian captivity or during the captivity.
