This book is the end product of a research undertaking that was conducted with a view of assessing the overall degree of effectiveness of the initial teacher training programmes regarding non-specialist music teachers for the primary schools sector in Zimbabwe. The study was necessitated by a shortfall that the researcher discovered after a micro evaluation study on the teaching of music at a particular school. Twenty final year student teachers and three music lecturers participated. Where as all the music lecturers and some of the student teachers admitted to the existence of some music teaching competency shortfalls among teachers which emerged as a result of the nature of the teacher training programmes, all the students were generally happy with the quality of training that was being offered. Major reasons that were cited for the gap included recruitment procedures that do not stress music potential of applicants, resources deficiency, time limitations and the two-five-two teacher training model that the country has adopted.
