Francesco Belfiore was a professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Catania, Italy. He worked in medical research and has published many articles and several monographs. In recent years, he has reawakened his long-standing interest in philosophy and has conceived a coherent philosophical system, outlined originally in the first edition of the present book (2004) and then in an expanded form in the second edition (2014), both published by the University Press of America. With the same publisher, he has also published The Ontological Foundation of Ethics, Politics, and Law (2007; rev. ed. 2013) and The Democratic Society and Its Founding Concepts (2012).
