Colm Tóibín was born in Ireland and lives in Dublin. He is one of Ireland's best known journalists. He is the author of The South, winner of the Irish Times/Aer Lingus Prize. In 1995, he was awarded the Academy of Arts and Letters E. M. Forster Prize. He is also the author of The Heather Blazing and The Story of the Night.

Eine unerhörte Geschichte. Ein Mord, vom Mörder selbst erzählt. Mit bezwingender Logik. Eine Liebesgeschichte. Ein Mann und eine Frau. Ein Maler und ein Bild. Ein winziges Fenster am äußersten Rand des Bildes. Durch das Fenster die Rückenansicht einer Frau. Sie blickt hinaus aufs offene Meer. Niemand beachtet dieses Detail. Blind dafür ist auch die Kunstkritik. Der Maler bleibt allein mit seinem Bild. Eine Frau heftet den Blick auf das Detail. Ihr Blick bleibt haften. Die Frau ist im Bild. Der Maler ist nicht mehr allein. Die Straßen und Plätze von Buenos Aires schauen zu. Der Mann will sein Leben mit der Frau teilen. Die Frau führt mehrere Leben. Der Maler zerstört das Bild. Der Mann tötet die Frau. Der Mann ist im Tunnel. Der Tunnel sind wir. – Diese Erzählung war der erste dreier Paukenschläge, mit denen sich der argentinische Atomphysiker Ernesto Sabato (1911-2011) in die Weltliteratur katapultierte. Victoria Ocampo und Albert Camus hatten Sabato beim Berufswechsel geholfen und die Veröffentlichung besorgt. Seite an Seite steht diese Erzählung neben Albert Camus’ „Der Fremde“.
