Lily, Marie, and Nicholas were all labeled as "unadoptable" when they were very young. Thus, rather than being nurtured by a loving family, they grew up in shelters and foster homes. Their experience of childhood was filled with loneliness and despair rather than love and happiness. Sometimes they were treated decently by the people in the "system," but too often they suffered from neglect and mistreatment, which continued to haunt them long after the abuse had occurred.
