Charles Dickens (1812-1870) war ein berühmter englischer Romancier und Sozialkritiker, der weithin als einer der größten Schriftsteller des viktorianischen Zeitalters angesehen wird. Geboren in Portsmouth, England, hatte Dickens eine schwierige Kindheit, die von finanziellen Schwierigkeiten geprägt war, die später einen großen Teil seines Werkes beeinflussten.
