The book is a seemingly brief, but inspiring output of several years of practise of a creative team of researchers at the Technical University of Liberec. The quantification of disparities among regions is a very noteworthy part of the book. The authors approximate diversity of approaches. Based on comparison, analysis and synthesis, they formulate their own proposals of criteria whose primary mission is not only to assess the current state and the position of individual regions in the Czech Republic, but also to explain the causes of differences. An original proposal even had to be reassessed, since the data base proved to be inadequate. In this context, it must be perceived that to measure the development of regions is a very complicated question. Different aspects of development can be in a mutually conflicting position. Apart from the usual approach, it is necessary to extend the criteria for measuring the dimension of regional development to organizational, institutional or a horizontal link between policies i.e. a regional policy, spatial development and environmental policy. The authors attempted to fill the gap in a methodological frame of the problem solved.
