Healthy body - healthy mind? An increasing amount of research is exploring the effectiveness of the mind-body exercise yoga on improving various aspects of mental health and even as supportive intervention for disordered eating. This book adds to earlier literature by investigating the effects of yoga on body image, body awareness, body satisfaction and symptoms of disordered eating. The latter are measured constructs argued to play an important role in the development of clinical level eating disorders, a number of very serious conditions affecting a rapidly rising number of people all over the world. Based on empirical research employing a cross-sectional survey study design and a sample consisting of 62 participants, this book reveals that practised regularly and over a longer period of time, yoga can indeed enhance body satisfaction as well as body awareness. These interesting findings may help to identify new directions for yoga interventions preventing individuals with bodydissatisfaction and low body awareness from developing eating disorder pathologies.
