The study The Vast Continent Uncovered: Content Analysis of NewAfrican Magazine assessed NewAfrican Magazine as a representation of the African media. Following arguments by Third World critics who state that Western coverage of their countries is disproportionate and distorted with too little coverage and too much concentration on the violent, bizarre, and conflictual issues, the project content- analysed 176 stories from the January to December 2005 editions of NewAfrican Magazine in order to find out if that is the case around the African continent itself. Analysis shows that there is imbalance flow of information within the African continent. Out of 176 stories analysed in all, 27.3% was for Southern Africa which by far exceeded 3.5% attributed to North Africa. Besides, African stories were positively orientated towards successes and developmental issues (54.6%) disqualifying the negative Western perception of news around Africa and to its entirety the world.

Nengieh Lizzie Wantchami is a doctoral student in Educational Foundation and Administration in the University of Buea, Cameroon. She received her Undergraduate Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and Masters Degree in Journalism from the University of Buea. She was closely supervised by Prof. Enoh Tanjong in the production of this work.
