His father gave Michael a challenge that he must perform in two years as a resident of the small community of Munificence in southern Georgia as a deaf mute; this challenge must be accomplished without using his money, family or present friends. Michael started with secondhand clothing $200 and a 56 Chevy to start his adventure in this challenging Wager. On his way to start his two-year challenge Michael runs into a man who had been kidnapped and escaped by jumping from the bed of the kidnapper's speeding truck. As a result of this chance encounter Michael meets the local Doctor and the Mayor of Munificence. With the help of the Doctor and the Mayor and some friendships, Michael develops plans that will help him in his quest. In the final minutes of the challenge a long forgotten family secret is unraveled, Michael proposes to the love of his life and wins the challenge.

Roland Vincent Boike was born October 28, 1930 at his family home in Madeira, Ohio. He is the son of Dr. Stephen Boike and Ludovica Rensi Boike and is one of seven children. During the Korean War, Roland served in 134th and the 147th Field Artillery as Chief of Section of a 105 Howitzers Battalion. Roland attended Western Kentucky State University, Ohio State Department of Agriculture and the University of Cincinnati Department of Applied Arts. He attended Lincoln College of Chiropractic and graduated in 1962 with a Degree in Chiropractic. Roland was a Staff Physician at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood, Ohio. He served as Team Physician for Loveland High School, Western Brown High School and Wilmington College Girls Soccer Team. Roland served as Mayor and Vice Mayor of Loveland, Ohio.
