Carol Ann Healy (nee McEvoy) was born on 13th September 1935 in Carshalton Beeches, Surrey though the rest of her family came from Bradford in Yorkshire. She was educated at Oakburn School in Bowness-on-Windermere during wartime, Convent High School Stockport, and Manchester University. Having graduated from there, she married the following year, aged 21, before becoming Head of Classics at a Cheshire Grammar School, during which time she was awarded an in-service teaching certificate. Her varied interests include cooking, spending time in the countryside, driving, languages, music, travelling, and writing.
