This is the journal of an oceanographer covering mostly a seven year period of great excitement during which time a new warm current off California was discovered. It is very wide (4,000 km) very shallow (100 m) and very slow (1-10 cm/sec. So far it is not depicted on any current charts or globes and it does not have a name. One important job this current does is to transport excess solar heat absorbed in tropical waters to higher latitudes. It is also instrumental in generating the North Pacific High pressure cell.
