Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic supernatural and fantastic stories. Born to the well-known sculptor Thomas Crawford and the sister of Julia Ward Howe, the author of 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic', Crawford enjoyed a cosmopolitan and literate upbringing that contributed to his subsequent literary career. Educated in the United States, at St Paul's School, and in Europe, at the universities of Cambridge, Heidelberg, and Rome, Crawford drew upon his rich experiences abroad to color his fiction. Crawford's novel 'The Witch of Prague' is a vivid exemplar of his literary style, showcasing his interest in the occult and the extraordinary. Published in 1891, the book explores themes of love, destiny, and the supernatural in the rich historical setting of Prague. Crawford's writing often intertwines gothic elements with a keen insight into human nature, earning him a place in the annals of 19th-century literary achievements. His works are still appreciated for their narrative flair, descriptive prowess, and the ability to transport readers to the locales he so vividly depicted.
