Their leader, a coldhearted man who bore a striking resemblance to the Kaiser, quickly sent the father and son on their way. Before they could escape, however, a woman from the group approached Paul's father for a word and killed him in cold blood with the flash of a steel blade. Miraculously, Paul escaped with his life that day, but never could forget the face of that man. Maurice Leblanc (1864-1941) was a French writer and novelist born in Rouen, France. Leblanc is best known for his creation of Arsène Lupin, the titular character of a series of detective short stories and novels. Lupin's adventures were first published in the French magazine, Je sais tout, in 1905. The series was such a success that Leblanc dedicated his life's work to writing the Arsène Lupin stories.
