A bracing distillation of this poet's distinctive talent, these verses address everyday topics such as alcoholism, ill health, and growing old and avoid traditional poetic forms. Often the poems are tiny fragments--embellished with asterisks, dashes, and dotted lines--that describe a brief encounter, as in "On the Bus" and "Some Last Words."
