George Cary Eggleston was an American writer, best known for his works depicting American life in the post-Civil War era. Born on November 26, 1839, in Indiana, he was the son of Joseph Cary Eggleston and Mary Jane Craig. He was the brother of fellow writer Edward Eggleston. George's literary career began after the Civil War, when he gained attention for a serialized account of his experiences as a Confederate soldier, published in The Atlantic Monthly. This work marked the beginning of his exploration of historical and regional themes in his writing. Throughout his career, he contributed significantly to American literature, particularly in the genres of historical fiction and adventure.
