"Photography is what rescued Thelma Pepper from the bounds of depression and Saskatchewan and Canada are better for it. In photography, she found what her father and grandfather before her had found and that was a capacity to peer into other lives and in so doing revealing the subjects as they had not been seen before. Pepper saw in her subjects a decency and nobleness that would have been missed were in not for her and her lens. In these stunning black and white photographs, and the stories that accompany them, we see hope and hardship; but we also see and hear how creativity can inspire human connection and transform lives. In the year of her 100th birthday, we celebrate her passion and joy of life. In a world that throws around the word inspiration all too easily, this matter-of-fact farm girl/scientist, mother and wife is just that. This is a portrait of a uniquely Canadian life. "--
