Jörg Breitschwerdt traces the origins and development of the evangelical movement in 20th century Germany. He argues that Evangelicalism arose as a counter movement to historical-critical scholarship in the 18th century. Therefore, it cannot be considered as an isolated phenomenon of later times. By applying the term "theologically conservative", he explores a fruitful approach in the study of this movement.
