In the field of development communication deliberately planned efforts to effect social change usually intersects with strategic thinking, whilst other not so deliberate efforts (such as social movements, internet trends, and so forth) may also effect social change. This book falls within the ambit of the former and is addressing a topic in the intersection between traditional study fields of strategic communication and development communication. The particular focus is how a theory commonly used in the strategic communication field, the Stakeholder Theory, applies to deliberate development communication efforts - more specifically how the Stakeholder Theory sheds light on the concept of participation. In so doing, the normative validity and descriptive accuracy of Stakeholder Theory to define the notion of participation is key.
