Autorenporträt
Sir Horatio Gilbert George Parker, known professionally as Gilbert Parker, was a British-Canadian novelist and politician born on November 23, 1862 in Camden East, Ontario, Canada. Educated at Trinity College at the University of Toronto and beginning his career as a teacher, Parker swiftly moved into writing and journalism. His experiences in the Canadian North and travels in other parts of the world deeply influenced his work. Parker became known for his historical romances and adventure stories, which were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 'There Is Sorrow on the Sea' is one among many of his works that combines elements of romance with the challenges and vastness of nature, a theme common to Parker's literary oeuvre. Some of his other well-known books include 'The Seats of the Mighty' (1896) and 'The Trail of the Sword' (1894), which solidified his reputation for weaving gripping narratives set against richly detailed historical backgrounds. An accomplished writer, Parker was knighted in 1902 for his contributions to Canadian literature and his political engagement—he served as a member of the British Parliament from 1900 to 1918. His literary style is characterized by a potent blend of melodrama, adventure, and historical accuracy, tailored to capture the imaginations of his readers. Parker's work has left a lasting mark on Canadian literature, encapsulating the spirit of its landscapes and historical moments with romance and vibrancy.
