Following minor juvenile troubles with the law his parents sent him off to sea on Scandinavian ships operating out of New York. In time, Jakob Smith worked his way up from a lowly deckhand to a qualified master mariner. Further studies brought him a degree in ship management. This led to the career he still follows trouble shooting marine related matters in often remote worldwide locations. He is married and resides in Penang, Malaysia.
