Most problems in start-ups and small businesses are actually personal ones. Even the most technical issue is essentially created by the business leader failing to listen to their technical expert or, if no such person is involved, by the failure to get such a person on board.

This book takes readers through the life-cycle of a successful business, looks at the personal and psychological issues that arise, and, most important of all, provides tools to deal with these issues.

The first section deals with the very early stages – having the idea, assembling it into some kind of prototype or pilot, and testing this against the reality of the marketplace (i.e. actually selling it to someone!). Issues that arise here are often about permission to succeed, fear of failure and perfectionism.

The next section assumes the pilot has been successful: time to build a platform for success. Entrepreneurs need to understand the full scope of what is required of them – too many books stress the passion required, not enough books stress the actual breadth (and style) of learning that is needed. Many issues arise if entrepreneurs have started while still in a day job, and now need to quit: beliefs about security, money and what constitutes ‘proper work’ must be in line with the new role and lifestyle. A ‘first big break’ can also challenge entrepreneurs’ deep, unconscious beliefs about whether they truly deserve success and are truly capable of capitalizing on it. These beliefs need to – and can – be changed.

In the third section, we look at the growing business and the psychological strains it puts on the entrepreneur. Delegation becomes a major issue: often a huge mental barrier for entrepreneurs. We look at ‘work addiction’ and its causes and cures. Finally we look at the psychology of leaving the business – something most entrepreneurs need to do at some time, but many fail to handle well.
