G. Shields earned her B.A. in Mass Communication from California State University, Hayward. She is a former postgraduate recruitment counselor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and featured book review columnist and writer for the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper, Holloway House Publications, Soul Magazine, Nommo: The Power of the Word, and African American Heritage Magazine.
