Clay Jensen, der mit Hannah befreundet gewesen war, reagiert auf das Päckchen, das ihn Tage nach ihrem Tod erreicht, dann auch verstört: Es enthält eine Reihe von Audio-Kassetten, die Hannah mit einer langen Botschaft besprochen hat, gerichtet an alle, die irgendetwas mit ihrer Entscheidung zu tun hatten, sich das Leben zu nehmen. Das fängt noch halbwegs harmlos an - ein Junge, den Hannah geküsst hatte, erzählt danach überall herum, wie bereitwillig sie sich angeblich befummeln ließ. Ein anderer benutzt sie, um Rache an einem Mädchen zu nehmen, das von ihm nichts wissen wollte. Wieder andere glaubten an das Image als Schlampe, das Hannah von nun an anhaftete und das nichts mit ihr zu tun hatte. Und Clay unternahm im entscheidenden Moment nichts, um Hannah, die sich in ihn verliebt hatte und in die er verliebt war, aus ihrer Isolation herauszuholen. Das Buch ist nicht ohne Schwächen: Manchmal holpert die Handlung etwas konstruiert vor sich hin, und manche Charaktere sind eher zu Holzschnitten geworden. Aber es macht uns wach für die große Frage, die hinter all den Episoden steht: Wissen wir, wie das, was wir zu anderen (oder über sie) sagen, bei diesen ankommt? Und wenn wir es wüssten, würden wir uns anders verhalten?
