Communal living enthusiast David Viafora pinpoints the nine principles in any community that can create the conditions for joy and solidity Research over the last few decades, both in the US and abroad, shows us that the fabric of community life is unraveling as our social resources deteriorate, an individualist worldview prevails, and rates of loneliness and isolation continue to rise. Is there another way to live? Where can we look for guidance? In this astute and empowering guide, David Viafora, a former Buddhist monk, illuminates how we can reverse these trends where it counts the most—in our own lives and neighborhoods. He offers practical steps and inspiration for those aspiring to build a new community, strengthen the community they already belong to, or who are interested about what community life has to offer themselves and the world. The nine principles Viafora uncovers—including Vision, Service, Joy, and Appreciation—are broad and easily applicable to our existing social structures. Once we wake up to the pivotal influence that community has on the health of our bodies, minds, and world, we can begin to build more trustworthy, supportive connections, and meaningful lives.
